  • Kafka Fragments, György Kurtág’s monumental seventy-minute song cycle on texts of Franz Kafka will be the focus of an unusual performing collaboration by professional and student musicians, The concert will be the culmination of a weeklong workshop hosted by Yellow Barn Music School and Festival in partnership with NEC. Four pairs of outstanding student violinists and sopranos will coach the Kurtág work with Yellow Barn faculty members Violaine Melançon, violin, and Susan Narucki, soprano and then share the performing duties with those senior musicians. While frequently used in ethnic music, the kalimbais yet to be established as a vital new music instrument. The goal of this program is to anchor it more firmly in the new music repertoire as a solo instrument.

  • At the Hawk’s Well is one of five plays by Irish poet W. B. Yeats based on the mythological hero Cuchulain. In Fisher’s operatic version, the spirit Guardian will be performed by choreographer and dancer Christy Fisher.
