Surviving in Bagdad...
fiogf49gjkf0d
I'm right there with you, temporarily installed in the middle of a Bagdad intersection.

So, one day not too long ago I slipped out during lunch and picked up a pair of decent, closed-back, full-size, fairly antisocial looking headphones (ATH M-50s) and a 2TB internal drive. Internal because 1) they are cheaper, and 2) because I didn't want to have to lock the drive up or take it home every night to prevent theft.

But I did take the new drive home that night and loaded it with a significant portion of my home music library, all in full resolution. Returning to the Bagdad intersection the follow morning, I stuffed it in the case of the HP work station and downloaded iTunes. Surprisingly, straight out of the on-board sound card, the sound is pretty damn good and allows me to concentrate in the midst of what I call the salad bowl.

However, here the musical journey is interrupted every day, all morning long. Count yourself lucky that you are not working in France; it is a French custom upon arrival at the work place, to make the rounds and robotically say good morning to everyone, regardless of whether you know them or not, and to accompany the greeting with a robotic hand shake and, if you're feeling particularly benevolent, a brief robotic look in the eye (!)... I mean everyone in the whole damn place, other than me, the anti-christ, makes the rounds without exception (its 9:30 a.m. here and I had to pause in the middle of that sentence and shake the hands of two arrivals). It is mainly a means of putting a spotlight on arrival time. I really must learn that expression that shows (pause for another handshake!) concern for what I see... Please do post a photo. Meanwhile, I've pulled the monitor right up into my face and set up a fan with exposed spinning blades (removed the protective cage) in the middle of the "hand shake reach zone" over my desk.

Anyway, you might want to try the HDD solution; portable external or internal (which is super convenient these days as most PCs now use slide-out drive mounts). This would allow you to listen to your really long FM recordings in native res, as most on-board sound cards now do more than 16/44.1.

Really amazingly good sound is possible if you're willing to invest in a dedicated headphone amp with built-in USB DAC; I did this for my home workstation and use it with planar-magnetic phones for late night listening/working. The rig is small enough to bring to work and I would if potential theft were not an issue.

Antisocial looking headphones….
fiogf49gjkf0d
Ok, now see why the French cars, all of those Peugeots, Citroens and Renaults, are as bad as they are: because Jessie instead of working is listening his headphones.

The media to play at work: would it be hard drive of CD player is irrelevant. I do prefer CD player as I do like to have hard CD in my hands; I like to read the box and so on. I have CD player and headphone configuration that I very much accustom – I use ONLY this configuration for over 15 years and I see no needs to change anything. Also, I would like do not use my PC to play audio files. Surprisingly under windows to play wave files is a relatively expensive task and I need as much as possible recourses on my machines as when I work then my PCs they rendering some recourses-expensive tasks.

I am surprised to hear about the French’s custom to be overly polite to everyone and to steal from coworkers. I never seen anybody was stealing anything in US offices. To steal a few million dollars from bank of a dozen of servers from data center – that is given and normal but to steal from a theft at next cube to you  - that I never seen. Well, I always steal any unattended food from somebody desk but I warn people that there is a mean always hungry Cat in the office and they need do not tamp fate and live the unattended food atop of their desks.

The mandatory greeting and smiling I did address a lone time ago. I have written a book in a past “How to make friends 101” and I have divulge the techniques. At you very first day fine a coworker with bigger month in the office, shake his/her hands for annoyingly looooong time and keep looking at his/her eyes. In his/her question why you shake hands for such a long time reply that your parole officers advised you to do so. I assure you that next day no one will bother to greet you and you will be perfectly left alone with your Bruckner.

About the “learning that expression”. I can’t post a phonograph but I will give you an idea. When somewhere in public transportation you see a woman with attractive body features but you are not willing to proceed to hook up with her than do you remember what you do? Of cause the only thing in the world you wish to do is to study the anatomy of her legs. So, with the same “face techniques” you can perfectly stare as much as you wish but do not make her to feel uncomfortable. Use the same face in only in reverse on your coworkers and they will vote you to be the most dedicated employee of the month while you are "out" for your Bruckner sessions....

Don’t ask, Don’t tell.

Today I was sitting with my “signature compassionate corporate face” in the office of my client with my headphones on.  A coworker come me and asked what I am listening. I asked him if he knows classical music, he said that he does not. I reached to my shelf and grabbed a CD with Bruckner 7. He put my headphones on and I played to him a few minutes of the Adagio opening. The guy took then the phones off and asked me “How the hell can you work, listening music like this?” Guess what I answered?

Internet Radio

I get much enjoyment from the Norwegian Radio web radio. They have a wonderful mix of the music that I like which is orchestral and advanced chamber music. They broadcast at 192KB which is not super fidelity, but their choice of special performances makes it easy to get lost in the music instead of mad at the hardware:

Apropos of that, I was pleasantly surprised at the audio quality at the BPO's digital concert hall.* You can access either a concert live or taped in their Archive section which has over a hundred performances. What was surprising was how much better balanced the website audio was compared to the average digital orchestral recording. Admittedly I have a decent headphone setup with tube amp and ESI soundcard, but it is aggravating that most CDs sound worse. This is coming from someone who plays records 90% of the time. The concert audio certainly has issues and sounds digital but I was impressed with the clarity and sectional balance.

* They do have a fee of 10 euros to listen for a week. I signed up just to listen to a rare performance of Ancient Voices of Children by George Crumb and not from any sonic expectations BTW. One annoyance was a few pauses from a streaming glitch.

Idagio.com streaming service.
Wify for a few months harasses me that I stop to spin my records and should switch to idagio.com. I can not believe that we allow women to vote!

Nevertheless a few days ago I went to Idagio from my DAW and was surprised with the amount of music, volume of catalog and with quality of lossless quality of streaming. I do not claim that Idagio delivers the same sound as I get out of my TL0 but it is very good for casual listening. It is $10 per month, not expensive but very convenient, might be more?

Is there a reason
Is there a repeatable reason why records in particular annoy her? does that include CDs or just vinyl? Not interested to wade into your domestic dispute but I was just curious about the specificness of it.

High Maintenance?
I'm saying, main reason people "don't like records" is that playing records requires too much fiddling around, and too much attention while fiddling. My wife hates it when I look over her shoulder, and she is not interested in "learning how to do it correctly", either. I didn't set out to have a system no one else can use without wrecking something; but that's where it's gotten. Mea Culpa.

Is this Paul S or Romy spoofing Paul S?
People these days don't do CDs or even digital downloads so annoyance with fiddling with anything has gone far beyond vinyl. I also can't believe that wivss or anyone else really now suddenly want to play vinyl except for the inconvenience. I can understand them not wanting a guy to have any hobby outside of themselves and their honeydo list. If you make it your paying job or a good source of income then they might be cool with it. No offense ladies!

True Happiness
The Key to True Happiness (and equanimity) being that music "plays by itself", with little or no attention required from anyone, and no chance for collateral damage to expensive/valued stuff.
