State Symphony of Russia performing in Worcester, Massachusetts
For those living close to central Massachusetts, State Symphony of Russia will perform at Mechanics Music Hall of Worcester, MA on March 31st.  Conductor is Mark Gorenstein and on piano Denis Matsuev. I don't know much about them, they are all new to me. I'm very familiar with the Mechanics Hall, and its acoustics is one of a kind for those that doesn't know. You can find more info about the concert hall at

http://www.mechanicshall.org/#

and more info on the concert itself at

State Symphony of Russia on tour in US and UK

Thank, Okan.

I will be there. Any good concert in Mechanics Hall worth to attend even under a penalty of two hours of driving.

This might be very much an interesting consent. The State Symphony of Russia use to be the main state sponsored symphony orchestra.  They were good, in orthodox way good – it use to be Svetlanov’s orchestra. I have no idea how they are nowadays. Mark Gorenstein in his was able to throw some orchestral fireworks (and I have some of those recordings) I have no idea what he is up to nowadays. Denis Matsuev is more controversial figure but it should be OK. I generally very much like when orchestras go on tours and I usually attends all “alien” orchestras in Boston. I would love in face each week experience a different orchestra…

BTW, for other folks who have interest in State Symphony of Russia under Gorenstein it would be worth to know that they not only wisit Massachusetts. You can easily to catch them in a town near you:

The State Symphony of Russia
Romy, thanks for the link, it is very educating. Anyhow without knowing who they are and how they are good, I bought the ticket yesterday, which is a good catch for me. I know 2hrs driving from Boston at the rush hour is a torture, but after the concert I wish you will be discharged of all your electricity and return to your home relaxed.

Okan

The Evgeny Svetlanov’ orchestra.

Well, that orchestra is higher level then usually visits the middle of Massachusetts : -)  Still, regardless who they are it always faun to hear orchestra on tours. It is lottery and it might be anything but sometimes a tour performance might but such a pearl that it might be a life-time experience. I hour case the Worcester concert is the very last concert in the US tour and who know, they might throw some “interesting” play.

BTW, if you are interring about the orchestra then you might get some of their recoding lead by Evgeny Svetlanov.

http://www.svetlanov-evgeny.com/EN/index.php

Some of his recordings were good, particularly the Russian repertoire and particularly from 60s. BTW, up to now I never heard anybody play Glinka and wild as Svetlanov did.

Mark Gorenstein is a very interesting fruit. Find his recording from 90s where he led the kinds from State Young Symphony Orchestra – you will love what he was trying to do.

Yevgeny Svetlanov
After you mentioned Svetlanov, I scan through my vinyl library five minutes ago and got two of his records, I think I have more of his records but have to search at weekend. The ones I gonna listen tonight are Scriabin: The Poem of Ecstacy, Rachmaninoff: The Isle of the Dead recorded by Melodiya/Angel SR-40019, the other one is Tchaikovsky Symphony  no 1 in G minor "Winter Dreams", Melodiya/Angel SR-40057.

Svetlanov's recordings...
If you never heard the USSR Symphony with Svetlanov then you might try a cheap circle “Symphonic Poems From Russia” where Svetlanov lead his orchestra on all-Russian program (74321 34165 2 and 74321 34166 2, each box has 2 CD). If you want the Svetlanov “kinky” staff then get SUSD 10-00166 from “Anthology of Russian Symphonic Music” where collected the best Svetlanov’s Glinka cuts. All of it available on LP as well.

PS: Oops, it looks why I was typing it you have found it…

The truly spectacular Worcester’s Mechanics Hall

Okan,

Thank you very much for pitching the concert.

The rumors turned out to be true and Worcester’s Mechanics Hall is a phenomenal concept hall. In fact I am so much pleased with the sound of that concept hall that I will be visiting it again when your local Worcester orchestra will have program that attract me. BTW, I feel that one of the reason why the hall sounds so great is because it never was built to be an avenue for music and the idiots acoustical engenders did not used their “skills” in the hall’s design…

BTW, the Verdi Requiem on April 27 sounds interesting. How good your local orchestra?

Rgs, the caT.
