Not sure how many folks out there have a solid, working understanding of the laser read/correction circuitry, let alone the means to test/track it, but I am not one of them. It does ring laughably true, however, that most of what people pay for in boutique gear is basically cosmetics/window dressing appended to generic guts. You mention trying to "keep error correction to an absolute minimum", and CEC has long claimed this as a distinctive feature of their marque. Back to Philips (also Sanyo, et al), it appears that there have been changes over the years that bid DIYers pay attention to series and serial numbers, as not all parts are interchangeable, even among similarly-branded component packages. As for changing the boards, given the right part is assured, I would certainly try to to get a board with the ribbon connectors complete, including the tiny (removable) clip inserts, and already soldered into the PCB. I simply lack the commensurate skills to properly solder those clips on those tiny, crowed traces!

Best regards,
Paul S
