This "brick wall filter" is and was a HUGE benefit to playback simply by getting rid of problems caused by out of band signals and noise.
Quality FM radio also had a filter that kept the 19 khz stereo modulation carrier out of the signal. Even although this often chopped off everything above 16 khz, the playback still could be very spectacular.Rerurn to Romy the Cat's Site
