The following link will take you to images showing my construction method for small to medium-sized horns (click on the images... to view the explanations) :

Since these are the first horns I've ever made, my main interest was in proving out the process ; it was to be a sort of test... For the horn in the images, I obviously used Romy's upper MF horn (the work of John Haskins) as a model.

I will add photos showing construction of the larger horns (including a pair of 45Hz Bass horns) once I get far enough into them to make a good series.

Jessie, absolutely wonderful.

Dima used the very same techniques to build his own MF horn. BTW, I made in past a prototype horn with similar idea that ended up disasters because of my stupid “willingness”. While I was applying plaster I spared led shorts across (got then in gun store) the wet plaster. So, the frame was very thin and I over apply the led shorts… as the result when the plaster was 70% applied it got too heavy for my frame and it collapsed…. I remember I was laughing like crazy….

After your horn will dry and you will do the final finish then do not forget to finish it properly. I was taught and I confirmed this fact with my own experiments that the finishing of the upper skin of the horn has very large influence to the MF sound, in fact even more crucial then some aspects of the horn itself. When I say “finish” I mean nether the sexy look, nether glossy shine, nor the utilitarian approach of unfinished horns (which in fact never sound good). I mean the finishing should have specific sonic merit. Contact John and he will tell you about his techniques, I learned from him and now I very much evangelist of his approach.

Rgs, Romy

PS: BTW, if you wish I might pull the imaged off the public image hosting and put them in my web server (it will be less amorphous)

Romy,

Thanks for your comments. My plan is to seal the horns once I get them all (all 8 of them) to the "ready-for-finish" state (still a lot of work to do). At that point I will try contacting John.

In the mean time, I've acquired very solid reference points with regard to the ideal texture and consistency of bagels.†

Please feel free to pull in the images (let me know if you would rather I send them to you directly).
