Neil, you have poured out so much information so fast that I may have missed the context in which it becomes relevant. It would be helpful if you would post photos of your own, personal hi-fi system and talk about it, including how you use it to listen, and what you listen to and for. Otherwise, there is no personal (which is to say, actual) way to relate to and so much as understand the posts.

I work for the US Navy. I used to help Dr. Bruce Edgar at the Image Dynamics Edgarhorn manufacturing facility and at his nearby home workshop. During and after that period, I began a systemic analysis of the historical extent of transducers, horns and upstream components available. Where I am coming from in my audiophile endeavor is to continuously intellectually hone my listening sensibilities for the purpose of my sacred consciousness and psychophysiological life extension. Because I want more flexibility and efficiency in my personal growth evolution possibilities, I have chosen to not simply rely on aspiring toward assembling a singular perfected end-of-life playback system signal-chain flowchart. Instead, I have assembled a revolving carousel of thousands of individual well-studied components as variables that I choose how to synergize together for the deliberate purpose of cognitively honing-into and actively modifying my attentional and consciousness capabilities at the consciousness plus electroacoustical equipment Synergy-levels. Intellectually, my high-functioning audiophile equipment-synergy carousel system is akin to a Diode Matrix (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diode_matrix).
I have a very well thought out and very large collection of transducers, horns and electronics to rotate into any position within my System. It is akin to having a large Lego piece collection. The Goal of my multivariate 'system' is to knowledgeably create equipment synergies that enable me to efficiently psychologically explore what is mentally possible within my personally defined understanding of what are the highest exoteric realms of equipment electroacoustical synergies. I am not relying upon audiophile shows to show me how to think and how to shop to achieve 'something' prescribable, according to the industry personel's various assumed levels of psychological purity and psychospiritual development.
Aside from my slight penchant for exploring the philosophies, poetics and emotional insights of alternative genre druggy musics, I was attached to the KUSC music scene for a while. However, while I can choose to psychologically enjoy musics, that is not the actual reason behind why I am a very deliberate audiophile. Mypurpose within audio is to utilize subtle equipment synergies via careful active listening to hone into my psychophysiological and neurocognitive constructions so as to tap into my biological life extension. I have developed this systems-thinking approach as an extension of and personally-tailored adjunct to what is known in the professional literature as Mind-Body Medicine. But not merely primarily as an intellectual abstraction. Pragmatically speaking, I am A continuously-practicing (unaccredited, however) Vedic and Taoist Master* who has achieved psychospiritual perfection continuously, within every individual subtle thought and action I perform, for many years (around the clock), including how I mindfully attend to my physiology and how I move my body. The real objective evidence of my being the only psychophysiological Spiritual Master on this planet is the extent of my influence upon the Quantum-sociological-personological-societal-Simulator, worldwide. Do not forget that my Dad is also a spiritual Master, connected to the US Navy continuously for five decades.
I am utilizing the audiophile intellectual hobby as an adjunct towards my psychospiritual evolution. Now, in terms of my audiophile agenda. How well-developed are my conventional neurocognitive, intellectual and philosophical ideals. I am known not simply for throwing around a lot of power by attempting to discuss high-displacement, high accuracy potential, very large DIY Horn speakers.

I remodeled my home to expand my listening room into 25'W x 40'L x 10'H. The concrete reinforcements logically paid huge dividends in terms of improving resolution capabilities.
