First of all I'm not religious in any usual sense either and I'm allergic to any structured religion. What you describe is a typical,
healthy-rational and intellectual image of God, which is pretty much irrelevant for that type of art practiced by von Bingen and alike.
Intellect is not the highest thing, it is an evolutionary tool, just like the brain, the hands, two eyes, two kidneys, etc
The path of direct comprehension has existed always, in the 12th century just like now, I agree, but my feeling is that in 12th
century it might have been a bit more visible as all those generations of thinkers have not come yet, nor the technological
progress and other false gods. We believe in our intellects probably as strong as 12th century people in their god.
What if we switch them off?
