Agree that it seems more people complain about grid power in US. Also agree that a "good" power supply is just that. Still, it seems like a good idea to have a good power supply as part of a "good" amp (or, whatever...). Some of the "best" amps I hav...

Ok, once I got pin 8 connected to pin 1, the curves came out straight. Here is the true pentode plot at 200V screen, 0.5V/step:And here is my new data sheet plot for triode mode:[img]http...

Yeah, so the closeness of the grids results in a higher current gain. So what? What is the relationship between gain and sonics? Are you saying that all high gm tubes sound better than low gm tubes? And does that include 300B ...

Ok, so it took me awhile. I finally got around to doing a design around this tube, believe it or not, as a driver for a 2A3. It just seemed right. Bought some 60's vintage(?) Amperex "PQ" on eBay. Well, here's what it looks li...
You are correct, though I believe the subwoofer covers only below 40 hz.
So???
This is coming from the same person who has built a 6-channel DSET? Anyway, it was more a thought about optimizing the o...

I do not remember details already but Dima and I had the same discussion a few weeks back. After all his research he was very much disagree with textbook use of 2A3. He felt that max power and the most proper operation of this tube will be at 275...
I afraid it might be some vibrant harmonic discrepancies between the single-stage high Mu IDHT and DC-coupled DHT, or some kind ULF wobbling of my DC-coupled solution. I think it is something more fine then frequency respon...

guy, i noticed you've mentioned a DHT 10Y linestage.i'm wondering what are your thoughts if there is a relatively easily obtainable (in say lifetime quantities:)) DHT (or triode stripped DHP or DH tetrode a la 307A or 807) capable of d...
One of the reasons I no longer use a tube tester. They make a measurement at a specific target operating point(s). You don't really know what it is, so what are the chances they will be close to your actual circuit opera...

I closed up the amps and moved it to the default operation position, right along with it all Dominus cables and so on. I played just mono music and was very interesting where I will find myself with this amp Sound. The right channel still was s...

Ok, I did play today with the MiniMe. I have to tell that then it turn black I kind got soften with it does not look to me as large and violent as I initially thought. I made some measurement and some listening. I peaty much know what I want to be an...
Romy,
As you're planning to run a 6K load, you can run less current without the transfer curve suffering as much. So, another shot at some numbers.... rather than use a RC setup to drop the voltage, Hammond (not my fa...

It will be a little project to modify the amplifier, but it may be educational. To optimize the Moondog circuit for the NOS 2A3 tubes, so they will give their best, I plan to buy a new OPT with primary impedance around 3.5-4K. Will that be s...
Hey. I have not seen it mentionned here, have you tried, or even considered regulated dc-current supplies for the heaters?Should have the sound quality of ac-voltage supplies combined with the lack of noise of the dc-voltage supp...

Thanks, Scooter.I am glad to hear from someone so quickly.I've been an "audiophile" for only 10 years or so. With the Edgarhorns, I am currently using a Cyrus Brenneman integrated amp (KT100). I also have a Yamamoto custom 2A3 (single plates) w...

Romy, don't be so sure the amp is 2-stage. The ECC99 is a twin triode (mu=22, Rp around 2k) so the two sections could be cascaded, paralleled or the second section used as a CF or several other possible topologies.
Their 2A3 is rated up to 40W pl...
Adrian, I agree that SETs generally have issues such as you describe, and moreso the small ones, especially at the frequency extremes, and at saturation, which tends to occur all too soon, IMO. But I have not sourced t...
Anyhow, the Melquiades does have some “tricks” in the realm of dynamic viscosity. It is what make it quite different in term of Reality Reconstruction as I feel that propagation of sound via air does not have linear “audio ...

Joaco, thanks for sharing. We still do not know what make those units to sound to sound good, so in a way we are shooting in dark. I have no doubts that there is great number of commercial units out there, similar to APS PurePower, which might be su...

I am looking into building a 45 tube SET amp and I keep reading about how important a good output transformer is. I read that cheaper output transformers like Hammond can be okay for mids and highs, but it will also reduce bass performance. If on...

I tried the ML2s via their 16 Ohm taps, even though my speakers drop to 4R at about 80 Hz before going back up their average 8 Ohms at 30 Hz. The overall sound off the 16 Ohm taps was more balanced and integrated top top bottom, ...

Yep, you re right, the Yamamoto A-06S is SET, I did not read it carefully and I was under presumption that A-06S is PP monoblock. Good for Yamamoto! The only amps I heard with AD1 were PP. Somewhere in the very end 90s I shortly was exposed to i...

…and I hope you did put your ET-703 tweeter in a time aligned position, did you?
Good link, Kris. What is missing in the link is the RL filters. The RC Low-pass filters are fine as the capacitors are not in the band-pass mode. It is arguable what would be better – a subtractive shunting cap or a few mi...
